Six Area Veterans Selected for 2016 Honor Flight
“We work to keep the spirit of patriotism alive and well on the home front,” explains Tammy Lewis of Amarillo who serves as secretary of the all-volunteer TXPHF. “History is best when experienced through the eyes of these men and women.”
Six area veterans have recently been selected to participate in the 2016 Texas Panhandle Honor Flight (TXPHF). Henry Dompe, Charles Arnold, and Gary Edward Heeter of Fritch, LeRoy Vernon Hunt, Jr. of Stinnett, David Guevara of Dumas, and Homer A. Shipley of Borger will depart September 15, 2016 for the three day trip.
Thanks to the Honor Flight organization, service men and women from throughout our region have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. each year. During the trip, veterans visit the World War II, Korea and Vietnam Memorials. All travel expenses for the veterans are covered by the non-profit organization in honor of their service and sacrifice.
In 2016 I had the profound honor of writing more than 75 individual biographies for the veterans selected to participate in the Texas Panhandle Honor Flight. This article in the High Plains Observer featured six of the recipients. It may be read at http://highplainsobserverdumas.com/six-area-veterans-selected-for-honor-flight-p14265-1.htm and was published September 16, 2016.
